After a long day full of difficult tasks, responsibilities and stresses, it can be hard to unwind at home. With work, school and everyday duties, life can get overwhelming and it can be difficult to cope. It can be tempting to just drop off to sleep right when you get home, but it’s important to do something you enjoy that will help relax your mind and body before bed.
Unwinding before you fall asleep will make your sleep much deeper and satisfying. Taking just 15 minutes before bed can make such a difference and help you maintain a stress-free, happy life. Below are five quick and easy ways to unwind and relax after a busy day.
Yoga is a great way to stretch out your body and get rid of unwanted toxins that may be floating around from stress or unhealthy eating. It’s also an extremely effective relaxation technique to reduce anxiety and calm the mind. I just did this yoga video with Ashley Sky Litecky by Connie Bowman on YouTube today and loved it. The music and the setting of the video was so soothing and it wasn’t too long or difficult. I feel so refreshed and ready to tackle anything!
2. Drink tea.
Sipping a warm cup of tea can be so comforting and soothing, especially in the cold weather. There is an endless amount of flavours and types like herbal or fruit you can pick up at any local grocery store. My personal favourite for bedtime is Pure Peppermint by Tetley. While I enjoy caffeinated tea during the day, I prefer decaf during the evening so that I’m not hyper for bedtime.
3. Light a scented candle.
Aromatherapy is one of the most effective ways of altering your mood and unwinding after a long day. I love lighting candles while I’m in the bath and just staring at the flames; it’s so calming and can improve the atmosphere of any room.
4. Make a to-do list and set an alarm for the morning.
Before hitting the hay, making sure everything’s in order for the next day will keep you from worrying while you’re trying to fall asleep. If you know that everything’s been taken care of already, you’ll be able to drift off to sleep worry-free.
5. Listen to some relaxing music.
Listening to music is a great way to relax and uplift your mood. When I can’t seem to fall asleep, I love listening to nature sounds or soft melodies. The apps White Noise and Relax Melodies are great to add some calming background noise to your sleep. Download one of them to your phone and choose from a variety of sounds like rain, ocean waves or flute.
Relaxing before bed is so important for so many reasons. It helps you achieve a deeper sleep so that you’re well-rested for the next day, and it improves your mental health and stress levels.
