Learning to live with diabetes

IMG_3334I’ve already hinted on social media that I have something to share with you all, and today I thought I’d dedicate a blog post to the subject. I was recently diagnosed with diabetes, so I’ve been busy with appointments, healthy food and medicine.

It was quite a shock to hear that I was diabetic. I wasn’t expecting it at all, and I never thought I, a young, healthy 21-year-old, would be diagnosed with something like this.

I was upset at first, but now I feel truly blessed that I was diagnosed with something so manageable instead of something worse. My father also has diabetes, and when he was diagnosed I thought about how one of the positives of the disease is that it gives you the motivation to start living a healthier life.

I had already begun my health journey before I was diagnosed, but now I’m choosing to see this diagnosis as the extra kick I need to really start taking my health seriously and finally rid my diet of unhealthy foods and excessive alcohol.

It’s still early in terms of my diagnosis and the doctors still aren’t sure what type I have, but I’ve already started taking medicine and eating super healthy.

I’m so grateful every day that I wasn’t diagnosed with something more debilitating or life-threatening, and I’m praying for those that have been. I feel like I have a new lease on life: I hadn’t realized that my condition before my diagnosis wasn’t normal. I was constantly exhausted, thirsty and hungry, and my vision had become so blurred I could barely see two feet in front of me. Now, after just a few days of insulin injections, oral pills and a new, stricter diet, I feel more energetic and I can see more clearly than I ever have before (which I’m still shocked and ecstatic over!!).

I just wanted to share this little piece of news with you all in hopes that I can inspire someone to keep going and remember that there’s always something to be grateful for. This doesn’t mean that there won’t be hard times when you feel like giving up, but it can really help with your overall perspective.
