It seems that every year has a different theme, and so far, this year has been all about reading. I’ve been using all my spare time to read, read, read: for pleasure, for education, for enlightenment, and for a variety of other reasons.
Since 2016 began, I’ve read seven books, which may not seem like a lot to you, but for me, it’s a real achievement. I love to read, but I’ve never been a particularly fast reader. I get distracted easily, and I can’t always discipline myself enough to finish every book I start.
But this year, I’ve managed to buckle down and stay focused. My goal is to read 52 books this year (one for each week!) so let’s hope I reach this number.
Here are my top three favourites from 2016 so far:
The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. I bought this book thinking it was about Duchess Kate and Prince William, but it turned out to be a sort of parody on their fairy tale love story. With its witty satirical take on the royals (of course it’s hilarious, the authors run a blog called “Go Fug Yourself!”) and charmingly romantic narrative, I loved it even more than I thought I would. In fact, I couldn’t put it down!
F**k It: Do What You Love by John C. Parkin. I just finished this one yesterday, and I loved the message it conveyed almost as much as the author’s rambling, childlike writing style. It was a hoot from beginning to end, and it really reminded me of some super important truths (read: f**k it, it doesn’t matter so much!).
Wisdom of the Ages by Wayne W. Dyer. This book was honestly profound in so many ways. Every single chapter presented a different piece of wisdom from greats like Shakespeare, Gandhi and Paramahansa Yogananda, and I truly felt changed after reading it.
Next up on my list: Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes and Spiritual Growth by Sanaya Roman. What are you reading right now? Any recommendations?
