What would you do if numbers didn’t exist? This question has been running through my mind since last night, and I knew I had to share it with you today.
After reading two articles by social media stars who both have heaps of followers on Instagram, I realized something that I knew all along deep down: numbers will not make you happy. Numbers aren’t real. They’re a means to an end, not the end goal.
This made me think of the movie Wolf of Wall Street. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but one line stuck out in my head. Matthew McConaughey is explaining the business to Leo, and he says something about not letting the client cash in, because that would make it real. They knew the secret: numbers are not real. Huh.
I think this concept can be applied to a lot of different things, not just money. I realized that I often succumb to backwards thinking: if I get a lot of Instagram followers, then I’ll be more successful, more happy, more peaceful. But that’s a delusion. Numbers are infinite, so how can any number ever make you happy? You’ll only want more and more and more.
This got me thinking. What if numbers didn’t exist at all? How would we live differently? Would I go outside more, be more relaxed, love myself more if there was no way to measure my success or popularity through a number?
If you didn’t have a numerical goal in mind for the amount of money you want make, but instead saw money as an exchange of energy and a means to live, not the reason to live, what would you do differently?
Moving forward, I want to focus on the value I’m adding to the world and to my relationships. I want to connect to my WHY with every step I take, instead of connecting to a number that isn’t real and that will only multiply once I finally reach it.
If you’re living with numbers as your end goal, you’ll be like the donkey chasing after the carrot. You’ll never reach it because it will just keep moving forward.
But if you use numbers as a means to get to your real end goal, whether it’s spreading a message of positivity, inspiring others, or healing sick people, you’ll feel satisfied and fulfilled in the moment.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh. What an aha moment for me!
What’s one number in your life that you could let go of right now? Is it the amount of books you read in a year, the amount of Instagram followers you have, or the number on the scale? Whatever it is, let me know in the comments below!
