Easy Ways to Bring Yourself Back to the Present

The human mind is a funny thing. It has the ability to dream, solve problems, and create art, but no matter how hard we try, it often falls into the same trap over and over again.

Staying in the future or the past with our thoughts might feel as though it’s helping us, but all it does is take us out of the present moment and rob us of the joy of living. While there are some situations where we must look to the future or the past for practicality’s sake, living in either one is a recipe for fear, anxiety, and resisting the present moment. And if you’re always resisting the present moment, then what’s left? A collection of worries, fears, and problems that aren’t real? I don’t know about you, but I can’t see the fun, joy, expansion, or growth in that.

I’ve learned this lesson many times over the years, and I never fail to forget it by getting sucked into my plans for the coming weeks, months and years. With so much life ahead of me, it’s tempting to live in the future, but it’s crucial to remember that this moment is all we’ll ever have.

I’m just re-learning this for what feels like the hundredth time, so check out my favourite strategies for bringing yourself back to the present moment below:

1. Listen. Is it raining outside? Is there music around you? Are people chatting? So often, we let all the sounds around us fall into background while our minds race. Make an effort to listen to the sounds around you without judgment to bring yourself back to the moment.

2. Breathe. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your thoughts, it can feel like an even bigger stressor to stop and breathe deeply, but this is when you need it most! Drop your thoughts on the spot (even though they feel extremely important in the moment) and take three super deep breaths. Inhale to the count of four and exhale to the count of four. Trust me, you’ll feel better!

3. Accept that life won’t always be perfect. Sometimes I get wrapped up in the idea that every aspect of my life has to be solved and perfectly tidy at once, or else I can’t be at peace. Give yourself the gift of peace despite all the messy imperfections of life because chances are, your life will never be perfect (sorry!), so you might as well enjoy the moment.
