Setting Intentions for the New Year

What does a new year mean to you? To me, it honestly doesn’t mean that much because I believe we can start fresh in every moment. 

That said, the new year is a lovely opportunity to reset and check in with yourself. Have you set and attained meaningful goals? Are you living your life on your terms? 

I love the idea that with each new year, we have a chance to start fresh and take inventory on what’s working in our lives and what’s not.

When I look back on 2016, it’s really quite crazy how much has happened in my life. I won’t go into too much detail, but everything that has happened really goes to show just how much can happen in 365 days. 

Change takes place slowly in the moment, but in hindsight, all it takes is one simple catalyst to create a shift in your life. You never know what seemingly small decisions will alter your fate forever, or what chance occurances will turn out to be hugely significant down the road. 

Now that 2016 is over, it’s interesting to reflect on the year as a whole. It was definitely a crazy 365 days, but I wouldn’t change a bit of it. I’m so ready to leave it all behind and welcome 2017 with open arms. 

One of the best things about a new year is that each one is full of potential and exciting new possibilities. We can choose to head into 2017 with fear of the unknown and worries, or we can see it as a blank slate, clean and sparkling fresh like a brand new snowfall. 

For my part, I’m setting the intention to bring three of what I think are the most important qualities into my life: gratitude, mindfulness and optimism. Without a conscious cultivation of these key ingredients to happiness daily, it’s all too easy to slide into negative thinking and complaining. 

Gratitude helps us to see how lucky we are despite all our worries and appreciate everything we have while striving for more simultaneously. Mindfulness reminds us to stay present in the moment instead of letting life pass us by, and optimism allows us to keep moving forward even when everything seems hopeless. 

In the new year, I hope to consciously bring these three attributes into my everyday life so I can live life to its fullest and really appreciate all the gifts around me. We spend so much time thinking and worrying and asking “why” when really all we should be doing is enjoying the gifts we’ve been given. 

If we could all cultivate these qualities daily through yoga, meditation, journaling, or even just consciously talking to a friend about it, the world would be such a better place. It’s not always easy, and we tend to forget these gems of wisdom, but reminding myself again and again is what keeps me going. 

Life is a gift and I’m so grateful to have another year here on earth. My birthday follows just nine days after the new year, so this time of year is always extra special and symbolic for me in terms of resetting and refreshing. 

And as for tangible goals for 2017? I hope to write another book, get published, continue blogging and writing articles, teach yoga a few times a week, learn and read a ton, get my licence (God help me) and maybe even get certified to teach barre. I’ll check in with you again in 2018 to let you know how it goes!
