How to Tap Into Love, Joy and Connection

I used to think yoga was the be-all, end-all, and anyone who didn’t practice regularly was shortsighted.

What I didn’t realize was that yoga is a tool, a means to an end – not THE end.

Don’t get me wrong – I still love yoga and I know it’s a profound tradition that has been practiced for thousands of years because of the connection to source it fosters. I know this, and I will always keep yoga in my life because of this.

However, I think that whenever a spiritual tool or practice becomes bigger and more important than the actual essence of spirituality, it becomes an ego trap (not that your ego is a bad thing, by the way! We need it to function as humans on planet earth). 

It’s the same with any other tool, from crystals to tarot cards to meditation. It can be easy to get caught up in a certain practice or lifestyle and lose sight of why you started doing the thing in the first place.

The reason I first fell in love with yoga was because of the way it made me feel, and the sense of deep connection and letting go it brought along with it. It worked for me, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will make everyone else feel the same way. 

As far as I’m concerned, anything that makes you feel joyful, expansive, peaceful and all those other divine emotions is spiritual – whether it’s a ballet class, a great book, or swimming in the ocean. Explore the things that light you up, whether it’s painting, nature walks, or even archery (something I’m definitely not familiar with! If anyone would like to teach me, though, I’m open to it). 

Understand that the things your soul craves change overtime, and it’s okay to quit something that doesn’t make you feel the way it once did. We’re constantly growing and evolving as humans, and to me, the whole point of this earthly journey is to experiment, change and live!

So the next time you go to yoga class, focus on connecting with something larger than yourself, rather than getting caught up in the placement of your arms in Warrior 2. Don’t get so lost in the practice itself that you lose sight of why you’re doing it in the first place.

And if you find yoga doesn’t light you up? Who cares! Keep trying things until you find what truly resonates with you. 

I think part of being a non-conformist is remaining open to all paths, and realizing that each one is true and valid in its own way. It’s all about finding what works for you, and doing more of the things that make you genuinely happy without judging others for their choices.

  1. I like reading your posts, Kenzie. They are thought-provoking. Many folks don’t do yoga for spiritual reasons, but simply to stay healthy in mind and body. I think that is its main value. That is the end that it serves..It is why I like yoga..
