There’s been a lot of buzz about “superfoods” lately, and while the term may be overused, it definitely speaks to the curative powers of natural produce like blueberries, goji berries and everyone’s favourite, kale. It’s common knowledge that the foods we eat are our medicine, but did you know that they can also promote better mental and spiritual health?

If you’re anything like me, you love the idea of holistic living and the mind-body-soul connection. So when I noticed a blogger I love drinking a cacao smoothie and calling it “light fuel,” I had to learn more.

Cacao is a seed that grows on a tree found in South America, and it’s the raw form of cocoa or chocolate. It’s much less processed than regular cocoa, and it has a ton of amazing benefits for your mind, body and soul.

Here are four reasons I’m currently obsessing over this Amazonian treasure:

1. It’s insanely healthy for your entire body.

Cacao is full of antioxidants (40 times more than blueberries), it’s an anti-inflammatory, and it’s packed with vitamins like Vitamin E, Vitamin B3 and magnesium. It can also lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and reduce your appetite. Cacao may also strengthen hair and nails due to its high levels of sulfur. The list goes on!

2. It can boost your mood.

Cacao contains “anandamide,” also known as “the bliss molecule.” If this isn’t enough to make you want to throw some cacao into your morning smoothie, you may want to know that it also contains phenethylamine, which is one of the chemicals that’s released in our bodies when we have sex or fall in love. Finally, cacao also contains serotonin, which we all know is the feel good hormone.

3. It can be used in spiritual practices.

Thousands of years ago, the Mayan and Aztec people used cacao during spiritual rituals and ceremonies because they considered it sacred. It’s still used today in modern spiritual settings as it’s known to help open the heart chakra, promote self love and strengthen connection to guides. 4. It tastes delicious.

Imagine if this amazing superfood had all these great benefits and tasted awful? The universe wouldn’t play us like that! Cacao has a beautiful rich, velvety taste, which only increases the feelings of calm and sensuality you’ll feel when you consume it. Use cacao nibs in cookies instead of chocolate chips, throw some cacao powder in your smoothies, or nibble on an 85% cacao chocolate bar for a special treat with amazing health benefits.
